When it comes to starting a business online, many have tried and many have gone down with the ship. Few actually succeed. It makes sense too when you look at all the factors, which are stacked against you. Why? It is because the formula for success is complex and ever changing. SEO, your content, search engine algorithms and competing niches, among others, paint a very overwhelming picture. It is not easy, or everyone would be doing it. With that said, you can make money on the internet if you know how or know who to call.
Not to discourage any online entrepreneur, but actually making it on the internet is difficult to say the least. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the beginning steps so you can organize your online business efforts.
For starters, you must define you niche. It is extremely easy to get off track and waste countless resources promoting every “too good to be true” product on the internet. Instead, take some time to discover what you’re passionate about. If you are passionate, your creative juices will assist in your promotional efforts. With the internet, promoting your product is everything. Your niche market should be small yet large enough to find those other passionate individuals willing to buy your product. Just make sure, that your chosen niche isn’t too competitive. You can see why a topic like “smoking cessation” would be too competitive even if its your new years resolution.
Instead, look for something that you’re passionate about that might fall into a category all by itself where you will find others just as passionate. For example if you enjoy raising chickens or hatching eggs, it makes sense that you might promote incubators for hatching chickens.
The second step is to define your product. Decide if you are going to sell a digital product or a physical product. As for incubators, for example, you have a choice to sell information on incubators or become a distributor of a line of physical incubators and use the internet to distribute them.
Selling a physical product is far more difficult than selling digital products so keep that in mind. With physical products, you have logistics issues, merchant accounts and storage or drop-ship arrangements. With digital products it is simpler because most of them are downloaded electronically and payment can be taken via PayPal or other accepted online check out system.
Creating your site: You may hire a professional or choose to create your site yourself. If you choose to do it yourself, expect a huge learning curve if you’re not familiar with coding sites, graphics etc. In the end, it may actually save you money simply because your site is done right and in a timely fashion.
Hiring a web designer early, depending on their skills, may help with topics previously discussed. Also, it might not be a bad idea to buy a web design for dummies manual or something similar to get a good understanding of what will have to be done. This in itself may save you money when the questions and quotes come out.
Finally, your site is up and running but you see little to no traffic. Take my advice and spend some money on a reputable online marketing company. The key word here is “online marketing company.” Taking your business online is not like it is in the movies where if they build it they will come. In fact without marketing, you will spend the money to build it, but they will never show up. Good luck with your online endeavors.
